We should be so lucky!!!!!!!!!!!

erm think this is not entirely called for - if you do not agree with someone ignore them don't bait them :o

Everyone is entitled to an opinion and obviously to disagree with those opinions but a lot of what muppetbro has said is true :err: what looks good online could be your worst nightmare when you get here and we changed our minds on a lot of things. Yes it would be easier to buy a house to move into but I definitely would not go down this route after getting here and experiencing things myself.

I have friends that got her this week and within 1 day had booked a flight back to the uk as they hate everything about Adelaide - luckily they had not bought a house beforehand :nah:

Quite ironic that another forum has a bitchy reputation while this one is so friendly??????????

I was quite surprised how muppetbro was being bullied on here by others for expressing his opinion. Also I agree with Lisa that a lot of what he said is actually true. He was just trying to advise people on how it can be surely. Was surprised as well that some of the responses came from people that haven't arrived yet so don't know how it is or have only been here a short time and seem to think they know it all! It's a great place to be and a great life but can be hard at times with lots of learning curves as with everywhere.

Hi,

We bought a house ready for our arrival, as we are on a PR visa we were able to do this hastle free. If you are on a temp visa you can still buy but have to do it as an investment or should I say "investment";). You will have to get FIRB (foreign, investment reveiw board) approval. You can then rent it out or live in it yourself. Compared to all the carry on we have here it's actually a very simple process over there. Whether it's a good idea is a matter of personal choice for us the decision was partly influenced by the fact that we were priced out of our first choice Perth in a matter of a few months and didn't want to risk it happening again.

Jen:)

Hi Jen,

My parents are coming out in October and want to buy here. They have no visa as yet and want to go down this route you mentioned. Can you tell me how you get FIRB approved.

Thanks

Bullying???? Hmmmm I think not. Maybe the flurry of posts was a tad unfotunate and could be seen by those of a nervous disposition as taking things a bit too far.

However, if anyone reads the thread and traces back to the source of these comments they will clearly see that the starting point was Muppetbro's assertion that another forum member's plans constituted 'absolute madness'. Personally speaking starting a post in such a manner is discourteous, lacks respect and is just downright annoying. This is not the first example of such behaviour. The posts that followed just go to prove that 'He who lives by the sword dies by the sword'. Obviously, however, 2 wrongs do not make a right (but the second one dose make you feel better :D).

I think that it is fairly obvious to anyone reading these posts that the issue is not with the opinion but with the attitude being displayed. Quite ironically this is the sort of attitude that a lot of people seem to be trying to get away from by going to Oz.

For what it's worth I couldn't buy a house without seeing it - no matter who had a looked at it for me. Then again not so long ago I wouldn't have believed I would move the entire family several thousand miles away to a country I've never been to. Everything is a gamble to a certain extent and some people are willing to gamble more than others. Hopefully the gambles we are all taking will pay off for us ALL.

absolute madness buying a house from the uk - we have been shocked at all the areas that look desireable from the realestate website photos - yep the house new builds albet smaller by far inside than older properties may still be nice to many but trust me they are crammed into ugly big estates with no plot size absolutely no character - a scar on the landscape when you see bulldozed expanses with charcterless treelless estates........whilst on the other side of the road you have older properties larger plots and a hell of alot more value ofr $ - however prices are rising and 12 months ago we rekon we cud be mortgage free now that looks very unlikely unless we go for a very modest small house in the outback :notworthy:

each to thier own of course but we have heared of many people regretting purchase - all my tick list of desireable places has been turned upside down.............

as for the travel times to the city double the estimates you read on forums and you will be alot closer to actual driving times - traffic is heavy for the last "20 minutes" which often takes 30 plus minutes if you catchmy drift......:arghh:

cost of living here is no way cheaper, wages are alot less so earning $ is making the cost of living more expensive than the uk imho

as my w ife said anyone coming here / locals requiring a mortgage of over 50% is going to struggle financially unless you are earning a good salary (considered over $50k) and few are in s.a.

having said that the people are cool mofos - my mobile phone is full of contacts after 10 days and really the only people to avoid are the pierced t ypes who once lived in elizabeth and are driving instructors and grow weed in thier sheds :biglaugh:

longer hours less pay make the ever increasing house prices less afordable - i dont t hink it is much different than the uk - so what im saying is dont kid yourselves up on the econmies - the lucky people are t hose that can become mortgage free the very lucky those who purchse two properties to rent out........which is driving t he prices up due to supply n demand...........

be realistic and dont be fed inaccurate - see for yourself

Older properties larger plots.........true

cost of living is no way cheaper..............take average wages into consideration.....true IMO

driving the prices up due to supply/demand...true (interstate investors also)

Be realistic...........see for yourself..true.

heard of many people regretting purchase...true.

Forums are for views and peoples opinions, Take out of them what you want. Everybodies wants experiences are different. Some people fall into a well paid job easily, and wonder what the fuss is all about, others struggle.

All views IMO....are worth seeing, especially those from people from or have lived in Adelaide.

Its not all bad in Adelaide though.

Hi Smit,

I dont mind reading any opinions, I welcome them I would rather know good and bad points than just good. But everyone is different, they want different things out of life and are willing to take different risks, they are also in different positions now, how muppetbro tends to upset/annoy/anger people;), is his posts seem to say his view is right and anyone who has a different one is:wacko:, and they all seem to be very negative rather than just realistic, this may not be his intention but from the response his posts get I dont think im alone in this opinion (the masses are not always right).

I for one will not mind being irritated by more of his posts but look forward to finding out mor of what he likes about Adelaide besides surfing.:)

I have read this thread from the begining and have to agree with you PP!

I have been on here for a month or so now and have seen people say " it is so friendly on here, not like the custard court". In all fairness that is because most of the people on here are in the UK. When you start to arrive and put up your posts you will see the difference.

I have met many many people here, some are in the "not lovin it camp" some are in the middle and some are in the " I fell into a good job with good pay and dont know what the fuss is about" camp... now the big question is ...what camp will you be in when you arrive????

I have also noticed that sometimes someone here can post on a thread and it can be completely disregared by people in the UK because it is not what they want to hear as it does not fit into thier dream, "rosey glasses syndrome".

For what it is worth....take all the info and research, research, research your self.

Never presume that some one is just being "negative", these are their findings and it could be any of you next with those findings, you wont know till you get here!

If you think that some of us have nervous dispositions and negative attitude (your response to my post) maybe you should question this again after thinking how it was you who got fired up- if you still think that it is some of us and that is what you are coming to Oz to get away from then maybe we have saved you some time, money and stress in getting the visa and doing the journey!!!! Can't believe I took the bait and let you lower me to your childish level! Now I'm off for a walk to calm down - think I'll walk along the coast and watch the sea lions/ platypus basking in the sun on their backs in the sea and then home to have a nice healthy brekkie of oranges and grapefruit off the tree in the garden!!!!!!

Yes you can get the grant from the UK but it is only available to those with permanent residency who intend to use it as there principal residence within 12 months of settlement or completion of construction, you can see more details on this website. http://www.revenuesa.sa.gov.au/
