is there any bad areas???

so excited i cant wait as its a beautiful place i want to see my children grow up in.my husband loved fishing on the jetty and chatting with the locals(they showed him how to fish)

Hi there,

I know what you mean about the jetty and the friendly people.

i took my two grandsons down to the Poret Noarlunga jetty last week. They were fascinated by the anglers with the fish in the buckets! They were ven more intrigued by the divers. The young kids jumping off the jetty were another highlight!

We had fish and chips from the chippie near the beachfront and ate them on the seafront.

That's why we moved here!

For more info and pictures for Port Noarlunga have a look at:

http://localvoices.realestate.com.au/south_australia/port_noarlunga/review?pid=streetadvisorsubrev

and and http://localvoices.realestate.com.au...arlunga/photos

It also seems to be a pretty good investment area. This was a news item on Yahoo on the 3rd of May listing Port Noarlunga and Christies Beach as being in the top 5 suburbs for property investment.

http://au.pfinance.yahoo.com/moneyan...state-in-2011/

You will certainly get a rental that takes pets, although it might take a little longer. There's also plety of local work for electricains with massive development taking place in Seaford and Noarlunga Downs but it's likely that he will have to travel around and won't always work close to home.

Hi, we are moving to Adelaide in September and my O/H has a job 5 mins from the airport, we have 2 kids aged 2 and 6 so eldest will be needing a good school when we arrive. Can anyone recommend any areas / schools? We are considering Port Noarlunga but wondered if there was anywhere closer to O/H work.

Thanks Cate

Guest THE HAMLYNS BIG ADVENTURE

Hi all, we are new today and I am finding all this information really useful, it can be such a minefield to try and research information whilst also trying to apply for visas, sell a house, and carry on with everyday life! We have 3 boys aged 2, 5 and 6 so we are looking for a family friendly place with good schools and facilities. My husband is a welder, does anyone know of job prospects for this line of work in this area? Tamara, I have been watching your website for availability as we are hoping to come out in september, but it looks like we may be too late for yours! But now I've spotted Dominique's, so maybe we can snap that one up! We got our visas all in a rush mid Feb after expecting to wait at least another year, so it caught us on the hop a little, but after a month of mad diy we put the house on the market expecting a quick sale, almost 12 weeks later and only 2 viewings we are now looking at our options regarding renting the house out, its a bit scary going without a lot of money behind us, but we have come too far to back down now. If we can pull it off in time we hope to be still on our way by September, see you all in Port Noarlunga!

These are the 2 areas we ended up choosing between. Both are nice but I couldn't find any good schools in semaphore. West lakes is great and the school is fab but it's zoned. Rents on that area are high too. Check Mawson lakes when you get here - I love it here - we r considering a move south as we spend a lot of time at the beach there but I'm very reluctant to leave ML - there's such a great sense of community here and lots of nice houses to choose fro

Hi All,

Its a great thread and really liked it!! We are Canadian Residents and presently in the Middle East. We got our Aus PR and decided to land Adelaide permanently during first week of December. Our daughter in class 9 and son in class 5. We are looking for an area nearer ( max 20 kms away) to CBD. Some of our friends suggests Norwood and Magill Area have good high schools and the suburb is also close to CBD. Please comment on the above suburbs please.... Any idea about the present rentals running for a 3 bed house in the area?

Thanks in advance...

Hi PIA, just been reading all about Port Noarlunga - It sounds fab! I believe the ony high school there that isnt private is Christies High. Can anyone give an opinion about it as I have heard somewhere that it wasnt very good and if that was the case it would effect our decision to move there.

Thanks Jane

Hi Im trying to research n east Adelaide areas to live and high schools i was told a few people from this forum lived in the golden grove area and was advised to post and ask about Golden grove high school? I love the sound of the area (my OHs favorite!) and its close to my OHs work but Ive heard a few bad stories about the school (a stabbing in 2009?) I want to know if this was a isolated incident? or is the school a no no? I would prefer the blunt truth rather than not know plz help!

I was also looking at charles campbell high and banksia park international has anyone any preferences?

thank you

Hi

I know people that go to all three schools - Golden Grove has a great rep, and very good facilities as it shares with two private schools (Gleeson and Pedare). I know someone in Year 11 at Banksia Park - she speaks very highly of the school too and is doing very well, so going from that, can't be too much wrong with it. Son's best friends are all at Charles Campbell (Year 9), most on the performing arts specialist program there, and are very happy with it too. So any of those would be good, depending on where you end up living. Modbury is another local state high school that has a good reputation.

Lots of schools have occasional incidents, and I always think how they deal with them is what shows the true colours of the school. For instance, Brighton school had a kid put a home-made bomb in a bin there a year or two ago, and that's a good school! Better for a school to have dealt with a problem successfully than for the problem to have not happened yet, and the school have no experience of such things!

Thx Diane

Its sooo not easy knowing what and where to send them!? my son has just left school here but will be going back when we get there and my daughter has just started yr 8 so will start high school at the end of jan when we get there

I totally agree with what you say about how a school deals with a problem that counts! it was just very off putting when u read it over the internet from the local paper (shocked me a little) we were led to believe Australia has a very low crime rate so i wasn't expecting it tbh but Its definitely better to know than not! :v_SPIN:

we are very lucky at the moment as the school they go to is VERY good (one of the best in the north west uk) with a massive waiting list and its becoming very hard to take my D out without knowing what the schools are like where we are going as there education isnt everything but its a big part but i do also think life experiences is equally as important :arghh: :arghh::arghh:

p.s still egerly waiting your news blog entry!

Such a useful thread. I bumped into people from our local area in the UK the other week. They were staying down in Victor Harbour in a holiday let but the travelling was killing them. Research is so important and where you stay affects everything about whether you manage to settle here or go home.

Weve been living in Hove & Hallett Cove for the last 16 months so I thought I would post my findging so that others can benefit

Beaches:

Hove:

The local beach is a flat walkers beach, calmish seas in the months other than windy winter days. The tide comes in quite high in the winter but is lovely and peaceful for a stroll or just with the kids. It's only a short walk down to the busier Brighton beach which is wider and fuller with sand. It has sand dunes and the more room to play with.

Hove Beach has a fantastic reserve at the top with a top notch playground and bbq's etc.

Brighton Beach 10 minutes stroll, Seacliff 20 minutes stroll. All lovely white crispy sand and the sea is generally calm. Can get some seaweed in the colder months.

Hallett Cove

If you live anywhere in Hallett Cove, the nearest beach would only be 5 mins drive. It's a pebble beach so therefore is lovely and peaceful. Its a great exploring beach as you have the conservation area close which has great geological interests. My kids love looking at the pebbles/rocks etc. There is a playground on the reserve just above the beach with BBQ's etc. So a great day out.

Shopping:

Hove:

We are 5 minutes away Marion Shopping Centre - this is a large shopping centre with 2 supermarkets plus a cinema, restaurants and cafes. 5 minutes away is a smaller shopping centre - Hove Shopping Centre along Brighton Road with all your local shopping needs, post office etc.

Brighton Jetty Road is great for boutique shopping, great cafes and restaurants. A great Thai restaurant/takeway place. The Esplanade Hotel is great for a carvery lunch and has a small play area for the kids. Good prices too.

Hallett Cove:

Hallett Cove Shopping Centre is a smaller version of Marion Shopping Centre. It has mostly what you would need, a BIGW, Woolworths, Bakery and some cafes. Great to pick up a few things without spending too much money like you can at Marion!

Schools: I'm not upto date with this unfortunately. My children go to the Southern Montessori School at O'Sullivan Beach, which is a small independent primary school. They follow the Montessori Philosophy and my children absolutely love it here.

Apparently there are some really good schools around Hove/Brighton area but may be quite difficult to get in. Worth having a look at the local council site http://www.holdfast.sa.gov.au/page.aspx.

There are quite a lot of schools around the Hallett Cove Area. I'm sure there will be some more info on the forum somewhere.

Hove:

The houses here can be expensive, you may have to shop around for a while but as it's an established suburb, a lot of the properties have the original plot sizes (ie. huge gardens). You will notice in Adelaide, the bigger the house, the smaller the garden. In Hove, this doesn't really apply. For $350 you would get a small 3 bedroom with a garden. If you had around $550-$600 you could get a nice 4 bedroom on a decent sized block probably with a pool.

Hallett Cove:

The houses are mostly new modern houses. The houses can be quite expensive compared to other areas, but it's a large suburb so you will have plenty to choose from. For $350 you would get a small 3 bedroom with a small courtyard garden. If you had around $550-$600 you could get a nice 4 bedroom on a decent sized block probably with a pool.

Other facilities:

Hove: There are local doctors, vets, shopping are always lots of community activities which are great. Lots of kids stuff to do, i.e swimming, dance classes, karate etc.

In general, I prefer living in Hove as it's close to alot of things but it's a quiet suburb. The school run is a bit of a nightmare but we do go against the traffic. We live sandwiched between the Brighton Road and Morphett Road so we do hear the sirens of a Saturday night occasionally but the rest of the week is quiet.

Another plus - its only 20 mins to the CBD.

Hi Christies Beach is an old migrant area that historically was an old working class suburb with some problems that go with low socioeconomic areas. However the area is close to the beach and on the move. Christies Beach High reflects the area you can find more info at:

www.myschool.edu.au

and http://www.theaustralian.com.au/national-affairs/in-depth/your-school/interactive#search

You could try comparing the school to the top ranked public high in Adelaide; Adelaide High School for contrast.

Aldinga is fine, it is in a newer area that has been expanded to accommodate new housing further south of the city. It is more rural and I think the main downside is that it is a hike to the city especially at peak times. I would say easily 1hr each way maybe more in traffic.
