Hi PIA,

Could anyone tell me if there are any good state high schools in the North Western region of Adelaide.

Also any opinions of suburbs in this region would be helpful. We can't afford many areas but have been looking around Semaphore, Queenstown, Ethelton areas as an alternative to the southern suburbs ive been focusing on. As i have spent the last 2 years looking south and now we are finally getting close to moving thought it would be good to keep north and south options open to allow for all potential job opportunities .

We need to be in an area where we could buy a decent 3 bed house for under $400 K so this narrows things down a bit.

Hi have you checked out the DECS website? Or the MY SCHOOL websites?

Plenty of information there, and you will find a catchment area section on the schools mentioned.

check out the realestate.com, and domain.com websites for housing.

Also, try looking at the Advertiser website on the weekend for the housing issue, which is a pull out here, you may find something in your price range.

Cant comment on the western burbs, or the north western ones, the south has some really nice areas, the east may prove a bit pricey......however, if you are comming on a 175/176 visa, you may get help with rental costs!

Good Luck

Jane

It's been many years since I was at school so I'm not sure I can help you much there. I went to Taperoo High (which has now become Ocean View College) and it was okay but hardly a leading school academically. Having said that, I was keen to learn and have always felt by going to a school that was a bit of a challenge it stood me in good stead in life and I still got into the course I wanted at uni and became an accountant. In terms of primary schools I went to Largs Bay Primary and that was rather good at the time. But as I said I'm many years out of date!

I mostly just wanted to reply to say it's nice to see someone considering the north west and usually everyone either overlooks it or is quite negative about it. We will be moving back from the UK to my house in Ethelton later this year and I found it a pretty good place to live before. You have the beach within walking distance and it's perfectly located for commuting into Adelaide with both Elthelton and Glanville train stations nearby. And of course Semaphore Rd has lots of cafes and places to eat. So often people seem to be struggling with a choice between an easy commute or living near the beach but in this area it's possible to have both I found. I know I'm a little biased but I thought I'd chip in with an opinion!

Thanks to you all for taking the time to answer. I have been looking on DECs and Myschool web site for some info but can't beat grass roots recommendations. We are coming over on 176 visa, interesting to know we might get help with rentals, will have to look into that! Will google earth Ethelton and surrounding areas. Thanks again and any more info or opinions would be great. Jane

Ok but its not north west but you might find that some schools dont have catchment areas. I went to Mitcham Girls High School (no catchment area) for two years and I think this would be accessible from the north west- train into city and bus to mitcham. Of course your kids have to be girls

p.s its a state school

Hi, we live in Ethelton now, after starting our new life in Largs Bay, last year. It's a lovely area, with lots of friendly people. My youngest son goes to Westport Primary School, and my oldest is in Year 12 at Le Fevre High School. Both boys have settled into the schools really well, and would highly recommend them to anyone. When we arrived, we contacted the principals at both the schools, who were very keen to meet us and show us around their schools. When you arrive, contact local schools, and arrange a visit for yourself and your children.
