not settled yet. Where to Settle?

Hi all.

We are thinking of moving to Hallett cove or somewhere there will be more brits with younger families. I would be grateful for any advice on this area or others. We are missing being around our own and feel we are also paying too much rent.

 

We are currently living in west beach and paying 450 per week rent and think we may find a cheaper rent for a 3 bed house and have a lease until August.

 

Also looking for decent state primary school in the area with children which have also come over from the uk.

 

Any help would be apprieciated.

We have been iN Hallett Cove for a short while and love it. My boys are settling in at school and we have met some very friendly and welcoming people from both Britain and Australia. There is a great mix of shops and eateries in the shopping centre, some lovely spots for the boys to fish, bike trails, parks and BBQs, good schools, great views, train stations, and 30 mins drive to CBD. I am not sure we will live here forever but while we find our feet in Australia it is a great place to start. You would certainly be able to get a 3bedroom place here for less than you are paying now.

Hi Yummie,

 

I Live in Christies Beach(closer to Port Noarlunga side) and it's a lovely area. Close to Christies beach and Port Noarlunga beaches. There is. Bike trail near here, close to colonnades,etc.My kids go to Port Noarlunga Primary School is very welcoming and friendly and must admit there are a lot of Brits were my kids go but they are socialising with Oz kids really well and seems happy and settled. School is undergoing a major redevelopment which is great for the kids and they also have aquatic centre as part of their curriculum. House prices are reasonable. it is worth having a look around. Hallett cove was our first choice when we arrived few months ago but couldn't find a house that we like and wen to look further down south and end up here and love it. Good luck on your house hunting , it' never easy...lols!

I do not think Diane said Hallet Cove is full of Brits but was really expressing what I thought - and that is why go to the other side of the world and seek out Brits to socialise with? Surely it is a case of find a suburb that you like and if you meet some Brits all well and good but if you don't, how about meeting the locals.

 

Strange isn't it how the British in the UK complain about the Asians and Eastern Europeans congregating in their own areas and then when the British emigrate they do the same thing:confused:

Sorry to hear your not settled....unfortunatley i agree with Diane that surrounded yourselfs with Brits is not the key to settling! It takes everyone a different time and some have an easier or harder time...i think the key is finding and having great friends (aussie or british!)

You can certainly find cheaper accommodation in other nice suburbs either with or without other Brits.

Totally agree with Diane, Misplaced and Scooterdan.

 

We moved away from the suburbs attracting all the brits, only for them to start moving in on our little town. Us Brits are like a disease, we spread everywhere. LOL (thats a joke!!) Go to a suburb that you like the look of and has all the amenities you want. Join clubs and associations to meet people. Don't limit your friendships to Poms as you are not getting the benefits of being in Australia.

There is not one other british family live in my street there is a Canidian family,Polish family,Russian family and the rest are Australian so i wouldnt say I am surrounded by Brits.There not much of a diffrence from where you live 9% are British with 74% Aussies where as Hallett cove is 13% British and 68% Aussies so not much of a diffrence but the population of Hallett cove is almost double that of Highbury and spread over a much much larger area than highbury.

And anytime Hallett Cove is mentioned it is assumed you live there primarily to be close to other Brits and that you have an issue with forming friendships with Australians. No -it's because we wanted to be coastal and couldn't afford Brighton. I interpreted the OP to be talking about family when they said they were missing their own. And for what is worth, we are originally from Hong Kong and the only Poms we have met so far have been through this site!!

Oh for goodness sake grow up! I don't envy you, and I don't expect yo to envy me. Everyone is different (and in some cases that's something I am eternally grateful for). As several people have pointed out - I didn't say Hallett Cove was full of Brits, it was just that the original poster expressed a wish to live somewhere with lots of Brits, and for their children to go to school with lots of Brits, as they were missing being surrounded by other Brits! Some people have such a chip on their shoulder - to coin a well-used Aussie phrase "Get over yourself"!

 

North, south, east or west - as migrants we are all foreigners in a country not our own and as someone above pointed out, the ghetto mentality of one race sticking together is something that has been criticised about parts of Britain. Nothing wrong with having friends of the same original nationality, but if you truly want to settle somewhere you have to assimilate and mix. It's also important to live somewhere you feel comfortable, so if you feel your rent is too much in the area you are in, then by all means look elsewhere: I always advise people to rent somewhere they can afford to eventually buy, as otherwise you end up having to uproot yourselves all over again when that time comes, and that's not fun!

Diane you do it all the time every time someone says I am going to live down south you get all defensive about living up north and tell them to have a look at other areas. A lot of people from the UK lived in city's and never got near the coast, People like the Idea of living in a sea side setting with coastal paths and walks and Conservation parks, I think it you that need to get over your affliction with the south it is you that are so predictable a typical Aussie.

100,000 Brits in Adelaide so chances are you are going to live by some of them. They can't all live "down south" with me.

 

Take a look around, some like the city life and have to be near the centre. Some live down south for the beach lifestyle and because they like being a bit out the way. Some live up north because well I don't really know why

 

Each to there own but wherever you choose you will be near Brits, Greeks, Aussies. etc etc.

I totally get the point I believe Diane was making and I totally agree. I think chosing a suburb or school purely on the number of poms there may make it harder to integrate. It's got to be easier to make friends with other new arrivals but does that really help you become Australian?

 

Now, I don't know if that's something people want when they come over but it was what we wanted. We wanted to relax into our new environment and become part of the community. And I think we pretty much have. People tend to assume we've been here a lot longer than we have (only in our seventh year, so only a heartbeat really!) because our kids have grown up Australian, we've volunteered, worked and played with Australians. We have a few really good pommie friends made when we first came over...because they were feeling alone too. (It took us a whole two months to make our first Australian friends lol!)

 

And everyone seems to have ignored the last part of Diane's post which was full of more sensible suggestions. Just saying
