Hello can anyone answer this question please :notworthy:

Is there any 'mature students' here studying at tafe that can tell me whether their 2 year course is classed as being full time or part time, and how many days per week it is and what hours, thank you :wubclub:

If I do decide to come to Adelaide on a student visa I need to plan around my daughter so have to see if it is workable around school runs and any part time work if im lucky to get any :)

Hi. Can't answer your question aboutlife at TAFE, but I am in the same position as you. I am just starting to apply to study at TAFE for a 2 year course and also have a child who is age 7. I currently work part time at the mment and have the luxury of taking him to and from school.

I would also be interested to find out if TAFE have the same holidays as the primary schools, so we can at least spend all of the holidays together.... GOOD LUCK. Would be great to hear how you get along..

I have friends who moved out about a year ago and they now know quite a few british peple who have gone over with various different qualifications (I know they were Plumbers, Hairdressers, can't remember the rest), but their qualifications weren't recognised in Oz. Apparently they are now having to pursue different careers than they originally planned.

This is what made me decide to study over there, at least when I apply for permanent residency, they will recognise the qualifications!!

If you look on the TAFE SA website you should be able to access courses and the hours.

You get good discounts on childcare when you are studying as well.

Hi Bagpuss and Poms in Skegness...

I am a mature student and have come on a student visa to do the welfare course at TAFE, which starts in a few weeks. I have no background in this, neither did I have any family or friends here, so came totally blind really. I have been here 5 weeks and think it is a great place.

TAFE fit the hours around me (within reason) so that I could work part time. In TAFE SA you can only do the course at Port Adelaide. You have to do 20 hours per week. Hours are 9 -12, 1-4 and I think there is the option to do 6-9. I will be doing Tue, Wed and Thu all day ie 9-12 and 1-4. This is at my request. And the options to do that were available. The course is classed as full time and you are entitled to work 20 hours per week during term time and any hours whilst off from college.

I am quite sure that the college terms are the same as the school terms. I dont have kids but I can tell you the breaks for me for 2008 and maybe someone else on here with kids can advise whether they are the same? Friday April 11th - Mon April 25th, Fri July 4th - Mon July 21st, Fri Sep 26th - Mon Oct 13th, Fri Dec 12th - Jan/Feb 2009.

I must add though that this particular course is much cheaper at other TAFE around the country, with Queensland I found the cheapest. Here it is $26000 which is a lot and in Queensland it is $17000...maybe something you want to consider? That said I wouldn't trade areas as I really enjoy the easy, relaxed, non-city like feel here.

Hope this helps you. Dont hesitate to get in touch if you have any further queries x

If you do decide to study in QLD take alook at the fees for your children to attend school first, I have found although the college fee is less the schooling fees are v.expensive, but that depends on if you have children and how many you have.

Hi Jellybean and the other Jo at Poms in Skeggy

I'm starting at TAFE doing accountancy diploma, just got start date of 17th July for induction day. Not sure where yet, we've only just sent acceptance letter back. When I get more info I'll let you know, as I am 'mature' student too.

Of course we now have a rush on our hands as we haven't had any offers on house yet, but we're taking it a day at a time at the mo, and currently researching schools and areas to live. It would be great if I was at the Panorma too as we like the look of the southern area anyway.

Where are you two based and Jellybean how old is your daughter, mine is nearly 9, called Lucy. She has started corresponding with some other children on this site.

Jo

Jo - our application took about 2-3 weeks to get a reply.

Hi all

It is all going very well. The course is really interesting, and for one of my assessment I will be using the community in this forum!!

My letter of accetance was about 10 days and was scanned to the agent (Study Options) and then to me.

Any other queries let me know x

Hi Jo

my daughter is 14 she is in Adelaide at the moment . we are going out on 22nd april induction like you is 17th july at panorama . we went to Adelaide 3 times last year so know the area very well. i was offered a place at the city campus which is lovely and modern but to be honest more for the younger students . panorama is quiet and quite small with a lovely informal atmosphere we also spoke to the staff there in admin they were really nice. i will be doing diploma in business admin. flagstaff hill and happy valley area are nice . have you got any idea where you want to be ? what TAFE campus have you applied to ? hope you manage to seel your house as july is not too far away !!!! i am sure accountancy is hels at panorama too. oh well student at 46 i am really looking forward to it !!!!

my daughter is very happy at the school there.

The more I read, the more I start to get a little worried......

It seems that you all prefer Panorarma Campus to Adelaide City with you being "Mature Students"....

Having reached 36 the other day, I would class myself as "Mature", but am a bit concerned about going to Adelaide City Campus, and whether I will fit in.

HELP, can anyone give me some positive thoughts.....

Hi Jellybean and the other Jo!

Haven't yet had to choose where to go, I assume this will be the next stage. I must say the Panorama would be the preferred choice, but if it's the city, I'm sure I'll cope. I take it Jo you are going to be in Adelaide, hey don't panic, you're the one with the life experience, you'll sail it!! Wherever I end up, let's all keep in touch and get together for support, this is bound to be a great experience! Also you can do my hair Jo! Can't remember what course you're doing Jellybean - you'll have to remind me! I keep losing track of who's who and what they're doing!!

I am a "mature" student...and I also worried about fitting in. However, after starting, I have realised that there is a mixed bag, I study alongside 18 - 55 year olds at Port Adelaide. It makes it all the more diverse and interesting. As the course you want is only offered at Adelaide City then you have no option. But the city is easy, convenient and a great place. I have to travel 1.5 hours on 2 buses through the city to get to my college!!!

Don't be disheartened....as a hairdresser you need communication skills with all ages, varied ideas, trends etc...what better opportunity than your study place?

C'mon Poms, you'll be moving to Oz....that in itself is fantastic x

Hey, Fluff, Jo & Jellybean......

Thanks for the support, I think every once in a while I get a bit jittery about everything.

Fluff, that a good bit of travelling you do every day, but I'm sure it's worth it.

Yes, we must keep in touch, to share experiences, as you say, We are all in the same boat.....

Sorry Fluff, it's taking me a while to remember who's who! What course are you doing (sorry if you've already said, but I couldn't find any reference in previous threads) and whereabouts do you live? Are you having to do that travelling 5 days a week? I would guess that the buses there are much nicer than those over here and probably on time!

Will keep in touch and arrange to meet up when we get there.
