"IT'S tough to keep children excited about education but Seaford Year 6-12 students today are celebrating the fact they are in the most improved school in Australia.

 

In recognition of its marked progress, the school was awarded the inaugural Medal of Distinction for the Best National Achievement in School Improvement, awarded at the Australian Government National Awards for Quality Schooling ceremony in Canberra this week. Principal Mary Asikas was "very excited" to receive the award on behalf of her school, which includes $50,000 for Seaford to invest. "It's a total buzz," she said. When she joined the school as principal, she "listened for a term" and then restructured the leadership team. She recommends a "whole-of-school approach to reform and improvement". "There are lots of things that are special about Seaford 6-12," Mrs Asikas said. "Staff are committed to improvement and change, and students are committed to wanting their school to be better." Mrs Asikas said the prizemoney would likely be spent on ongoing professional development for staff, to continue the improvements of the school. Year 11 students Emily Vladic and Rhiannon Ruediger said the school offered a positive working environment. "It's a great place to be, the teachers are always helpful, and there are tutors on hand for anyone who is having trouble," Rhiannon said. Emily said there "is a strong sporting sense" within the school, with students encouraged to participate in co-curricular activities. "There are a number of VET (vocational education training) courses including automotive, music, engineering and cafe courses, and a lot of people get offered apprenticeships when they've finished," she said. Federal Education Minister Julie Bishop said the school had shown how effective leadership could improve outcomes for students. "The results of Seaford 6-12 School's leadership restructure five years ago have placed the school at the forefront of school reform and innovation," said Ms Bishop, who presented the award."
