Credit reports

Hi all,

 

Would anyone recommend obtaining credit reports / credit scores from UK sources to take with us.

 

Would this help, with gaining credit confidence with banks etc during our first few years in Australia, or aint UK Credit reports worth anything in Adelaide when we emigrate.

I'm not sure, but I've been told the credit system in Australia is entirely different to the UK and based around affordability (outgoings vs income) rather than our 'credit builds credit' system. I could be wrong though.

 

I'm sure it wouldn't do any harm.

Credit still builds credit here, but in a slightly different way. Your old reports will make no difference here.

So how would I go about building a credit record when in Oz? My credit score in UK is top rated with no defaults and nothing outstanding other than mortgage. I am keen if possible this record be used as a good basis for credit in Oz?

Get a mobile plan for one. I was advised to hire furniture when I got here, but it isn't cheap and isn't worth it just to push your credit rating (which I didn't need anyway).

You could apply for a low limit credit card too.

You can just about ignore everything from the UK ( and not just your credit rating), you are/will be, in Australia and things start again, but I do not think you need to worry about or dwell on this matter as in reality it does not take long to get the credit rating once here, and you will not show up in any checks as a bad credit risk anyhow, it will come down to the person/organisation you are dealing with ( like telephone, real estate) to make a judgement call initially. You could, to speed things up always get some of the stores cards and put some credit on them, telephone accounts and electric accounts soon start clicking in too.

This whole credit rating thing never actually entered my head when we came out, and never really raised its head.

Yes,too true.Sometimes i think the only thing Australia has in common with the UK is it speaks the same language!!!Much more American influence here than British IMO!
