Enough negitivity...We're 1 month in & lovin it!!

Instead of the frequent discouraging & gloomy threads & comments posted on here by some pessimistic members, I thought I'd share SOME GOOD NEWS!...The OH & I have been here just 3 days over a month & we are LOVIN IT!!! So if you are in the thought process, planning stage, or the waiting interim, I would say carry on, persevere, climb those emotional mountains & get yourselves here!!!!

 

The 1st couple of weeks are admittedly very manic, but when moving to a new country what else can you expect?!!! We spent many days traipsing around the city (getting lost lol!!) attending to matters such as new bank accounts, Medicare, tax file numbers, driving licence, mobile sim cards, employment preparation, car buying & probably many other things that have escaped my memory!! But its definitely doable, we just got on with it & consequently know our way around lol. We are now feeling very relaxed & extremely settled, of course we miss family & friends but we don't miss home 1 bit, in fact we have communicated with them more this last month then we ever did!! Thank goodness for Skype & whatsapp!!

 

We love the weather most favourably. Being able to have our morning coffee in the garden in the glorious sunshine, going for walks & lunch outdoors in the lovely surrounding parks & beaches, along with many BBQ's & beer/wine also outside in the evening warmth, almost everyday is absolutely fabulous. I've not worn my coat since travelling to the airport in London!! I'TS GREAT!!

The overall nature of Adelaide is relaxed & easy going (apart from the numerous mad, impatient drivers!!), everything is so easy to get to its hard to believe we're living in a city! My OH is loving the huge variety of food available here, with such a great choice of international cuisines available & affordable.

 

So to anyone on their way down here, stay positive, keep your dreams alive, just as we did & you will achieve what you desire...& should it not work out, you can at least look back knowing you've tried, instead of living in regret of not knowing & asking what if???!!!!!

That's great. It's always nice when you feel at home straight away. You've come at a great time weather wise too. It's beautiful at the moment. You must not be up early in the morning yet if you haven't needed coats. ;-). It's been bloomin cold some of the mornings the last couple of weeks. But as soon as the sun comes up it's lovely. :-)

 

 

I personally haven't noticed a disproportionally negative vibe on the site.

Mandi & Leigh, thank you for such positive post. Some members are really too pessimistic. Life can be hard, and having a nice life does not mean it's also easy. Usually the nicest things are the ones that we need to fight for.

I wish you all the best in the future! I hope you stay active on this forum, because many of us would appreciate your positive advice when it's our time to move.

I presume you both have jobs ? Are on a permanent visa and don't have any children to consider yet ? Everyone's experience is different and what works for one family might not work for another .we lived in Adelaide for 6 months last year . Came back to the UK because there was no work in my husbands trade, yes he had a casual job (not related to his trade and low paid ) and his boss was fab but could only give him a few hours a week . We sent hundreds of cv's out went door knocking at various firms, we thought we had done all the research we could before we arrived in Adelaide . looked on job sites , looked at areas, schools, cost of living etc .in case you think we are unusual we know lots of family who have felt and had the same experiences as us . We made some wonderful friends their, but for us the UK is a better option for our family .

Perpetration, realistic expectations and being adaptable seems to be key. We are very unlikely to secure jobs from UK so will have to take the plunge not fully prepared however adds to the adventure!

Good to hear you are enjoying life so far You've started work too I see from your sig. Hope its going well. I think sometimes things just fall in to place for some easier than for others. Its true, no one can ever know till they've given it a go.

 

I must admit, we've loved being out here since we arrived last October. Haven't really had any woes or upset to write home about. Just the odd niggle but that would happen anywhere we lived as its just day to day life stuff. Hubby is happy to be home, son has settled brilliantly and I'm all good too. We are currently in the process of buying a house and once we've signed on that and can finally move in, that'll be us pretty much set.

 

Also we've enjoyed the social life. Been out a fair bit catching up with hubby's friends, family wedding and road trip a few weeks back, the Fringe where we caught a fair few shows, lots of beach and swimming pools over the summer, cricket, day trips, exploring... list is long. Just want our own place now and we'll be set.

What a great post, it helps all of us about to make the move. We are due to come out at the end of April and whilst I know its not going to be easy, its so nice to hear that for some its going well. My view now, is that if we don't try we will never know! If things don't work out we go home, but if they do work out we could have a whole new life to explore.

my oh and I are about to celebrate our first year of living here at Easter, we are lucky in that we both work, I'm not doing what I want to do yet but pick up enough casual work and am fully optimistic most days! That I will achieve my dream job with patience and determination, that what got me here in the first place!

 

we felt it after a few days of having landed, just a sense of feeling more settled, all the hard work and initial heartache is worth it for all those who are due to come out. It's not a move that works for everyone but give it 100% and see what happens for anyone with doubts if you don't try you don't know.

Love your post, I think it is so important for people looking on here to see how people have settled! Those last couple of months before you leave are so difficult that you need to see a light at the end of the tunnel!

 

We arrived 12 weeks ago and we have loved every second of it. The first few weeks are hectic, but they are also exciting. We chose Hallett Cove and we are so happy here. Within 4 weeks me and my husband had both found jobs, my 15 year old daughter started school, we secured a rental after 1 week (we literally walked into every estate agent and asked what they had available) All three of us have settled straight away, like you I think Skype and whats app are a god send, and the mobile phone contracts can include international calls too which is great (we also added unlimited uk calls to our Telstra phone bill for $7.50 a month) so staying in touch with family and friends is so easy. I miss people in the UK but that's it, I don't miss the place one bit.

 

Our 15 year old daughter settled into school so well, they give them a tour of the school and put them with a mentor for a week to help them to get to know the school, she has made so many friends and been made so welcome.

 

So far no negatives for us, we have loved every second, I think you need to be open minded with work and maybe consider roles that are different to your role in the UK, but that doesn't mean you have to stay in that job for ever. Our attitude was apply for everything, accept what gets offered to bring money in, and change later if it doesn't suit us. Luckily we both have found similar jobs to what we had in the U.K, so we feel so lucky.

 

The only thing we have not done yet is begin to socialise with anyone! I may check out the meet ups on here! to be honest we have been that busy and excited by everything that its not bothered us.

 

I would honestly recommend this to anyone, for 12 weeks I have woke up every day feeling lucky to be here, you wake up to sunshine, everyone is so friendly, even after work we can go the beach, or for a lovely walk, glass of wine overlooking the sea, weekends are full of new places. Don't let the stress of the visa process put you off, it is worth every second of stress!

 

Good luck to anyone applying, just remember it will be worth the wait!

Glad to hear that people are enjoying it here and settling in well, the weather in March is quite lovely, definately the best month of the year - although be aware that there is a 'honeymoon period' and after a couple of winters here and a couple of Christmases in the sunshine missing family and traditions, some of the novelty will no doubt wear off. Don't bag the negative posts on here totally, as I am sure that they are useful and informative and help people to be aware of what may eventuate. Life is not always plain sailing and as they say 'forewarned is forearmed'.

So glad to hear your experience so far and I am now looking forward to trying Adelaide although my husband is having trouble here applying for jobs as it asks him for a Australian postcode which he obviously hasn't got and after reading hesk1 post I would prefer my husband to have a job to go to. So just wondering you know off anyway round the postcode problem. I do hope you can help us with this issue or put us onto someone whom could. My hubby is a bricklayer/stonemason and also a project manager, he is extremely hard working and takes pride in his work. I also hope every thing over there just gets better and better for you both and you keep posting how good it is and encouraging others to take the plunge

Oh my goodness!! Thanku to each of you for the posts, likes,numerous views & private messages. It is pleasing to see that positive newsis much more greatly & widely received then negative vibes. To those whodisagree or are reluctant to admit there is much unwelcoming pessimism on here,yesterday I met up with a family, who are here validating their visa, they toldme they almost looked at Perth instead of Adelaide purely becauseof the negativity on this forum!! Good thing they put aside such views &came to make their own judgement!!

In response to a few other things…

To Blossom, I have indeed been up early in the mornings; Iwalk to get the bus at 6am & have not yet needed my coat. This week admittedlyI’ve worn a light cardigan but that has sufficed. No doubt I will soonacclimatise to it the longer I’m here & like you, feel the cold more, butfor now it’s great!

To hesk1…To correct your misconceptions, it is only myselfwho has a job, my OH is still looking for employment & only I have PR, myOH is here on a 489, so I am indeed conscious of the associated constraints ofinsecure employment & residence. Also I certainly do not think that others’not so good circumstances & experiences are unusual. I am well aware that everysituation is different & as I initially expressed, in my view people haveto remain positive & try instead of regretting not trying

I do appreciate balanced views are valuable & yes (aspointed out) we may have been lucky & fortunate to have had such a goodstart, but I believe in a positive mental attitude to everything in life, especiallysomething as life changing as emigrating.

So to those interested, I will indeed be re-enforcing my positive newsfrequently! & wish everyone the very best of luck, Mandi x

Well done MandiMR2 even though conditions maybe a little tougher than previously reported, I am a great believer of making your own luck, working hard (even if that is simply in order to find a job to start with) and managing your own expectations. Personally I think there are too many people who leave their home country expecting a land of milk and honey with employers lining up with jobs paying multiples of what you earned previously, constant sun and all houses with swimming pools etc!

 

Australia is a developed country with many of the same issues as ie UK, many of the people coming to Australia from other countries are better qualified than us poms and yes it looks to be an employers market at the moment.

 

I guess from your picture that your in health care as is my wife, did you secure your job before landing and have you stepped back on your carreer path to secure work?

 

Best of luck to your oh in securing work and hope everything continues well for yourself, a little envious however great to hear good news stories. We are just plucking up the courage to book our tickets, hand in notices and rent the house for a year or two.

I don't think this forum is negative at all. It's realistic and down to earth.

The family the TO mentioned who would avoid Adelaide and instead initially wanted heading to Perth, on the sisterwebpage perthpoms the content is quite the same like here. New migrants who struggle to find work. Migrants who don't know anybody in a new city (Perth or Adelaide) and figure out that both cities are 'not what you know rather than who you know'.

 

By the way most migrants do the same mistake, not only in Adelaide. Coming to a country they have never been to! Internet research and third party reports are not enough, good qualifications and skills are also not enough, because in Australia employers tend to have an obsession with national recognised certificates. Aussies are not interested in overseas trades papers etc. They trust their own system and when migrants want to join in many of them have to adjust and are forced to up skill with 'Aussie qualifications'.

 

I doubt that anyone would form a view only from a internet forum! By the way, what person 1 might perceive as negative could be completely different from another person's view in this ever fast changing Western world.

Must be most confusing hospital layout, even now after two years I find myself looking for something on level 5 and heading off to the stairs to realise I started on level 5!! Actually except Flinders where you have up to even find the right lift! Maybe it's just me

I can say the negativity on here DID almost make me think twice about coming to Adelaide!!! But I bit my tongue & ignored the negative vibes & like you Mandi, I stuck with my dream & came to see how it is for myself & now I'm here & very happy! I don't have PR or job yet but I remain hopeful & positive. Some members need to find better things to do with their time instead of dampening the dreams of others!!
