just updating messages. Working as a TRT now for the last 4 weeks and have only had 2 days off, so there is work about and also turning down approx 3 jobs a day. Be warned you get about $100 a day less in a private school if you are on tier 9 for state. There is a vast difference between some state and independent schools. I must say I am loving it. Schools very different to yo the UK but in a good week x x x

Hi kathy, if you have a moment could you elaborate on how teaching in the schools in oz is different? I'm hoping you say there's less paperwork!!!

I am also a teacher. I arrived in Adelaide May 2010. I was registered with the TRB by August 2010. 2 days after be listed with DECD, I got a phone call for an immediate relief maternity coverage for two terms. While at that school I worked like a dog, no complaining, yes sir, no sir, the perfect teacher - the Principal never heard from me for the 4-5 months I was there. (they love a low maintenance teacher). I was then offered a country position for the next year - I accepted. 8 months later I was granted permanency. 3 years later I am in Adelaide as a permanent teacher.

 

If your flexible and go wherever the work is - your golden.

1,750 km each way and still in South Australia. Top left corner of the State. Who cares - when your teaching, you never have time for a life unless it's between terms.

Just wondering where is the best place for TRT to get work from - Cluster schemes (DECD),  employment agencies such as Select,  Ranstad  or what else?  I just want to work

2 days per week R - 7 JP.

I just want 2 days per week TRT -  R - 7 - do you reckon I will get work.  I am prepared to travel anything up to 2 hours ( a long way) from  where I live in Sheidow Park.

It's just where to start looking.  I know about the DECD Cluster schemes, but was wondering if other employment agencies such as Select / Switch and Ranstad do employ TRT / contract teachers, or do they just advertise to have you on their books.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

At this point in the year I'd expect most teachers and schools will have a huge pile of CV's for relief teachers and many will have a short list of their call first ones if they need days covered. And then if set days come up for a term or something they may well arrange in school and opt for one of the relief teachers known to them already. 

If you don't mind heading to the country towns you could contact the schools direct and send your CV perhaps? Outside of the metropolitan Adelaide area schools can struggle to fill posts. 

For next school year I'd suggest going round and dropping off your CV to schools in the run up to the new school year and getting your face known. Teachers I know did this for relief work and it seems to work if you get called in a few times and then the staff get to know you so call you first IYKWIM. They focused on a more local area, say within 40 minutes commute and got days, but often it was at short notice (on the day). For some this has lead to a 6 or 12 month contract for a few days a week but its taken a couple of years to get to that point.

Thanks for that, albeit, not the most positive reply, but reckon, that's how it may be.  When you say country (rural) as opposed to metro - I've put my name down for the cluster Barossa and Gawler - would you say they were country/rural enough districts - as really hoping to get something before Christmas hols.  How good are the employ agencies and which ones would you recommend are the best to gain some employment - I am only looking for two days.  Thanks.

Perhaps not far enough out? You are heading north with those two areas also. South and east opens up a whole load of other options. People will still travel to those places you mention with relative ease. 

You say two hours so perhaps look at places like Mannum, Murray Bridge, Myponga, Tailem Bend, Port Wakefield, Wynarka? Those sorts of towns are all a good 60-120 minutes away from suburbs in their direction out of the city IYKWIM. I put in Port Wakefield to google maps and put West Lakes as the starting point for example. Mannum I went with Hallet Cove as a starting point. I've been to all of those towns at some point (apart from Wynarka) since moving here (some not for more than a couple of hours at most but that was enough to know they were not somewhere I would want to live in or spend a lot of time in but passing through was fine. Country towns here are so very different to the UK and I am not suited to them nor they me  ). 

I have no idea about the employment agencies. Most of what I know is because I know teachers who talk lots about how the system works (or doesn't work) and much of it seems to be word of mouth and having a foot in the door and getting your CV out to schools. 

Most people don't want to work rural or country, hence them staying in and around Adelaide. The job market here seems to be saturated with teachers atm. So many young newly qualified ones and many who can't get work or can only get relief stuff.

@Tully how did you go getting work? Last term was quite difficult across the board (I'm secondary trt). There's a 'Relief Teachers of Adelaide and South Australia' Facebook page that's very good if you're looking for primary work. I've done work through agencies (Switch) and they tend to get a lot of primary work, all in the private sector, and very easy to choose your days without 'burning' schools. Pay is quite a bit lower than DECD though, but sometimes you have to weigh up convenience and consistency (when you're only available select days) vs pay rates.

Jossmcboss I did find some work all of 10 days, but it was a start and a bit or lot of an eye opener.  I feel a bit more prepared this term.  And yes you are right the pay is less for switch.  I have only just registered with them, but what a palaver, so many forms to fill out etc.  Still waiting on references coming back and now we need to be up to date with immunisations.  Do you have full/permanent work?
