Hi all

we are in the visa process to move to oz and we are coming to aderlaide. It is new to me and my partner we are 27. Can anyone give us some advise on good schools for our 6 year old and where the best suburbs are? We would like to be near by things but not to much in the city. Hope anyone can help and give us any advice

There are lots of great suburbs around with good schools, you really need to be a bit more specific about what you want from a place to live. A starting point is where you are likely to get work and then how much of a commute would you be happy with. Then you need to think about whether you would like to be near the beach, the hills or the city. You probably also want to think about what it is that makes a school good and what would be best for your child. To get a bit of an insight in to the various schools have a look at myschool.edu.au. This has information on school funds, pupil numbers, background of students and Naplan results for several years. The Naplan results are particularly good as they show where the school stands in relation to schools with kids from similar economic backgrounds as well as the overall results.

Hi both thanks for your reply. We will be looking for work as a carpenter/joiner and also we would like to be nearer the beach but not to far away from the city. We are coming over to visit in October to have a look at the different areas but would like to research so I can plan my visit so any help or advise is appreciated. Thanks

If you are coming over for a visit I would highly recommend staying somewhere central so you can see a bit more without having to travel too far each time. Have a look at google maps to see where everything is in relation to everything else. When choosing an area you have to take things like location of work and potential budget in mind and some of the nicer areas aren't always the more affordable areas and often there is a compromise to be made. For some that means moving further south, for others it means not being quite so close to the beach. If you a set on being near the beach I'd recommend having a look at all the beach suburbs from Semaphore right down to Aldinga. There are plenty of really nice suburbs by the beach with good schools and everything near by to choose from in that strip. Also while you are here make sure you have a look around some of the none beach suburbs, just to see what else is around and be sure that the beach suburbs are right for you. Rostrevor is the best of them obviously , but seriously there are lots of great suburbs in the east and north east that are worth looking at if just to say yes, by the beach is where I want to be.
