Buying a PC in the UK or Australia

We are unsure whether we should buy a new computer(old laptop has packed in) before leaving the UK or whether we should wait until we arrive in Australia.

 

The things we are looking at are price in the UK compared to Australia and whether a computer bought in the UK is compatible in Australia.

 

Any help would be most appreciated.

I think PC's are a little more expensive here.

 

If buying in the UK you must ensure you have a world wide warranty.

Even point this out to where you are buying from and ask them to check.

As far as Desktop PCs are concerned, most large chains in the UK are manned by staff who probably wouldn't know the answer if asked.

 

Smaller specialist suppliers would most likely build machines to order and then either offer their own warranty or let the customer deal with warranty issues themselves. Most of the retailers use off-the-shelf components they each have their own specific warranty entitlements, often as long as 5 years (in the case of some Hard Disk drives)

 

If you're unsure about dealing with an issue, should one arise, then either purchase over there (for peace of mind) or go for something like a DELL (PC or laptop). Do as Tyke suggests and double-check the purchase is covered internationally and you should be fine.

 

There's definitely plenty of choice over here, from the larger retail chains. Take a look at the catalogue offerings on the sites below, as examples of what's around at the moment (PCs and Laptops):

Agree with Tyke, they do appear more expensive here, we brought an ACER laptop in the UK & its been fine here, no problems at all.

With the exchange rate we have now, everything is more expensive, unfortunately. A brand name laptop (from the UK) with international warranty is looking like a sensible option all round...
