Why do people hate cyclists?

I was told by a police officer that I couldn't ride my electric bike in a bicycle lane, which of course was ridiculous, its top speed was only 25 kph, and I was often passed by other cyclists who were pedalling. I contacted the SA Police Minister's office, and was told the police officer was wrong, and I was assured that I could ride in a bicycle lane because my motor was only 200 watts. It was confirmed to me in an email which I printed and kept with my bike.

 

I see that electric bike motors can now be 250 watts in Australia, but motor assistance will cut out at 25 kph. Certainly the increased power was needed.
