Hubby would probably need a builders licence make sure he takes plenty of references with him

 

 

Personally I always check if people are licenced (and insured) to do the work they say they are. For any newbies or people not familiar with the system, you can check a persons licence and what they are able to do on the Consumer and Business Services website and also if you click on the 'Licence Specific' tab it gives you the information on who needs a licence etc...

In The Advertiser today a public warning has been issued for a Tradie working unlicensed and people are being advised (as I mentioned above) to check peoples licence information on the Consumer and Business Services website before they undertake any work....

 

 

Consumer watchdog issues public warning against builder Andrew Laundy

THE state’s consumer watchdog has issued a public warning against a builder who they allege is trading as an unlicensed business that is failing to complete work that has been paid for.

 

Consumer and Business Services has been receiving complaints about Andrew James Laundy, trading as ‘Creative Renovations & Demolitions’ and ‘Aj’s Contracting’, for services such as fencing, paving, shed construction and ceiling repairs.

 

Acting Commissioner for Consumer Affairs George Kamencak urged consumers to avoid dealing with Laundy.

 

“Laundy has allegedly been contracting with customers through an online website where consumers can seek quotes from listed tradespeople,” Mr Kamencak said.

 

“Consumers have complained that Laundy has taken substantial payments, but failed to carry out or complete the work.

 

“We strongly believe he is carrying on a business without holding the relevant South Australian Building Work Contractors licence.”

 

Mr Kamencak said traders who fail to provide services within a reasonable time frame after payment were breaking the law and could face penalties of up to $220,000 and up to $1,100,000 for companies.

 

He warned against relying on listing websites as they may not ensure all traders meet the appropriate requirements and instead referred them to the CBS Licensing Public Register.

 

“We strongly advise people to check licence details and the reputation of the building contractor before engaging their services,” Mr Kamencak said.

 

“To avoid getting stung, have a look online for reviews of the business or tradesperson and remember to check the licensing register to make sure a tradesperson is licensed.”

 

CBS is continuing to investigate the alleged conduct.

There's always that interim period between getting the licence and what are you supposed to do?

Catch 22. They want local references for work but you are not supposed to be working.

Most arrivals work whilst completing the licence.

Yes, there are rules and regs but the reality is that they are there to protect the customer from shonky operators, not newbies who are going through the system to get registered.

 

Trade work is plentiful at the moment. Carpenters, painters, builders. It can change but don't listen to the negativity. In this field of work there are jobs.
