Can I ship a car on temporary visa?

Hi everyone,

this is my first post here, so please go easy on me.

We are applying to migrate under a 489 temporary residence visa and we were planning to ship everything out in a container and put a car in as well, but I'm sure that I read somewhere that you can't import a car to Oz if you are on a temporary visa. Does anyone know if this is true or not?

Assuming we can take a car in the container, can anyone share their experience of how this all works e.g. is the whole container held up while the car is checked and registered etc., or can you get the rest of your belongings while that is all sorted out?

Thanks in advance,

Jason.

Welcome to the forum. Just so you know your first few posts need to be approved by a moderator before they appear. It just helps to stop spammers.

I'm afraid I don't know anything about importing cars so can't really help, but there is a thread over on Poms in Oz all about the subject. I'll see if I can find it and post a link on here.

Found it http://www.pomsinoz.com/forum/transport-shipping/97053-transporting-your-car-oz-everything-you-need-know.html

489 is really a provisional visa rather than a temp visa. I am pretty sure it is permitted to import a car on this visa, it certainly was when we had a provisional business visa ( again not PR but with a direct path provided you do certain things).

just checked and yes you can provided you have owned it for 12 months.
