Private Medical Insurance for 489 - is it compulsory?

Hello,

I joined the forum today; was introduced to it by a friend who has received lot of inputs from this forum.

Me and my family (husband + 2 kids) arrived in Darwin NT in Jan 2018. We have Skilled Regional Sponsored (subclass 489) visa for Northern Territory.

As I got job in July 2018, I have completed the one year job criteria and by Jan 2020 we shall also complete 2 year stay criteria and apply for 887.

We have not taken Private Medical Insurance as somehow by God's grace we did not require medical services until now. But one of my friend advised that for all 489 visas Private Medical Insurance is a requirement. Appreciate if I can receive any guidance in this regards.

Also if it is a requirement; then is it okay to have a Medical insurance at this stage?

Thanking you in advance.
