We are in two minds whether to sell the house with all our stuff in it (ideal for a 1st time buyer) or to sell empty via a house sale. So was looking for some feedback to see if anyone had done something similar and also was wondering what the approx cost is for a family of 5 to set up with the bare essentials i.e. Beds, Sofa, TV, etc, etc.

Thanks for all your help.

Not to dampen you fire but in todays climate a first time buyer will find it next to impossible to get a mortgage to buy a family of five's house.

On that basis I would take everything with you. Go through your house and cost how much it would cost to replace everything. If it comes to less than the cost of a container (£3,500 ish) then you would still have a case. I would guess that the replacement value is far in excess of this so it makes more sense to take it all with you.

Hi, just read your question and my advise is bring everything. We didnt and the quality and choice is not as good, also it can work out more expensive for the same thing. e.g a dyson vacumn is roughly $800-1000 for a good one. If your a trade as well def bring as much as you can. Hope this helps Paul

We didn't bring any of our furniture with us...it was all old and falling to bits. Mind you, we knew that and didn't bother replacing it in the UK coz we always planned to buy new here.

It depends on where you go and what look you want for your house. I can't say the costs but there is an IKEA here, plus Harvey Norman, Fantasic Furniture so have a look on their websites to give you an idea.
