How easy is it to find a home near the school?

How easy is it to find a house to rent in the school catchment area, and to know whether the homes are in the area? We will be limited to secondary schools as my daughters want to do performing arts, once we have decided on a school I am worried we will not find a rental near the school, we wont be able to drive them to school, they will have to get there on their own. As we will both have to work.

Thanks for any help.

Most high school catchment zones are pretty large, so there is a choice of where to live within the zone. There are rentals everywhere and It is just a matter of plugging along and seeing everything in the area. It might mean taking something you might not really consider if you want to get your kids into a particular school and living there for a while and then look around for something more to your tastes. Even a 2 br unit counts if it's in the catchment zone, all you need is an adress and a long term rental agreement for the school to admit your girls. Which schools do you have in mind?

Lots of High School kids go to school on a bus too - either a specific school bus or the normal public one. Also, if your children choose a school with a performing arts specialism, you may find it's not so vital to be in the catchment area, as often the school will offer places on the specialist course to pupils from out of catchment.

Thanks Rachel, We will go for any type of rental to start with, or for a long time!! I have looked at Aberfoyle Park,Blackwood, Henley and Seaview schools. I am just checking rental prices in these areas, also near to a shopping centre, hopefully for my work. Are any of these areas in the hills? As we have lived up hills all of our life and would love to live somewhere flat!

Blackwood is in the hills, Aberfoyle Pk is in the Southern hills, more rolling than up and down. Seaview is in Seacombe which is on the edge of hills. Henley is flat. However once you get up to Blackwood it can be quite flat and all 3 are close to Marion which has lots of shops. Suggest when you get here you check out all the 4 schools, cos you might end up working in Rundle Mall in the city.

Depends on where you want to send your daughter. The best state school in this area is Brighton High, they do specialized music, dance and drama. Seaview High is a performing arts school but it doesn't have a very good reputation. We live 400 metres from Brighton High but we are moving to a new house, our house is available to rent for $360 per week. It has 3 double bedrooms, 500 metres to the beach and the landlord is great. Hope we have been some help. Neil & Rhian

I know both Charles Campbell High School and Golden Grove have performing arts specialisms. They are both in the North East. We have friends who live out of catchment for CC school but both their children both go there on the Performing Arts programme. If you are looking at music specifically, then check both Marryatville High (known as THE best state high school in Adelaide by many people) or (I think) Glenunga High School.
