G'day Nic.

Depends on your price range and you will need to go to Service SA to get your licence exchanged first.

I got a cracking little hyundi excel 1.5 auto 19997 for $3500 from bi low moters on main north road, blair athol. second hand cars hold there price realy realy well.

The cars are out there but you gotta look for them

We got our first car here before we got our Oz licence without a problem.

Look on Trading Post online, they have loads on there, its sort of like auto trader.

Hi Nic.

Yeah straight forward, just go to Service SA and fill in 1 form, take it to the counter then get your pic taken.

Simple as that. You will be issued a tempory paper licence and you propper one should be mailed to your address within 10 days.

Hi Nic we arrived 2 weeks ago and had the same problem. Dont know which visa you have. If you have temporary residence (we have 457 visa for 4 years), you can drive on your UK licence. If you are a permanent resident of Oz then you have 3 months to apply for a licence and you can drive on your UK licence in the meantime. You don't have to retest or anything but have to surrender your UK licence. we ended up hiring a heap of a car for a week (sorry but wouldn't recommend hire company we used!) then we got sorted out by Darren Boscence at Adelaide Vehicle Centre on main south road. He's a top bloke, real nice guy. My husband is a mechanic for Aston Martin and looked over the car - they don't sell wrecks! Their website is http://www.adelaidevehicle centre.com.au. If you do go to see Darren, mention Dave Steele recommended him! We were really lucky and got finance on our car, even though had only been in the country a week! You just need to be able to provide passports, visas, etc and put down 35% deposit. Sorry, plus you need a bank account open from which to make the payments from. Again, opening an account is a piece of cake! No worries! Good luck!

Sorry if info given above wrong, but when my wife went to the office to sort out our driving licences (for car), that was what she was told!! They said if we were permanent residents we would have to surrender UK licence but as we are temporary (4 year visa) we can just drive on UK licence, which we need to carry with us at all times when driving, together with our visa. It's good to know we won't have to surrender it when we do (hopefully) become permanent residents! Thanks.

Hi

Regarding licences, we are also on a temp visa but got our Aussie licences straight away. Mainly because it is a useful form of ID (especially when applying for rentals etc) but also it saves carrying passports etc around and not all cops are aware of the full rules for temp residents so think you need an Aussie licence anyway - didn't need the hassle. We kept our UK licences as well.

Cheers
