Hi all, I have just sent off my SA Teaching registration and have booked on the mandatory training for when I arrive. Can anybody clarify the need for first aid over in SA and do I need a first aid qualification to start doing supply teaching. Does anybody know of where I can find out about courses and when they run please

Thanks

yes you need to have it all done before you can teach. ( inc TRT)

My wife did her first aid course in Plympton on Marion Rd. Nr Beaumont tiles warehouse.

Then all the hard work begins to try and get a job.:arghh:

you need to do it...you can book from u.k.....Red Cross is good or St Johns...mention its for teaching in schools as there are different ones....its a long day and you'll feel pretty tired after it...you get an exam at the end....the Mand course will leave you even more shattered...7 hours and pretty full on

All employers ask to see these documents before they will offer you any work. Advice given is good. We spent approx $100 for each course (both if us are teacher)

I thought I had to do my first aid course once I got to Australia - I take it from this info that I can do it here then?

No you have to do the BELS (Basic Emergency Life Saving) course that is on offer here. I did the St Johns one and it was very efficiently run and they gave you the certificate the same day. The first aid does include things that are more specific to Oz e.g. treating maladies caused by strange and venomous creatures!

For the Man Not course I joined the AEU teaching union and did their's which was good. The only thing I'd say about them though is that despite the fact I was only doing school based tutoring this school year they tried to charge me a fortune in union fees. Find the whole cost of union very excessive (although it is tax deductable.)

All in all you won't be able to get your TRB until you have done both courses and had the certs back and submitted them.

Hi just to say thanks for all your responses, it is now clear I will need the first aid course. I will get on with booking on course for when I arrive. There is so much to do and also am fully aware I will not end up with full time job, maybe I will enjoy the rest !

Thanks agin

Andy
